The philosophy behind DEEPAVALI. Naran means human. Asuran means bad characters-Kunam. Narakasuran symbolises ordinary human beings who have not erased their bad characters. We must destroy our bad characters through God given intellect-Krishna. Deepavali is the day of pledge to destroy our evil characters so as to remove ignorance-Dark from us. Light symbolises pure intellect. As we have pledged to destroy our bad characters and to lead a new life that contains full of good characters; so we celeberate the arrival of our new good life with new dress and sweets. This philosophic explanation has been given in Thiru MUPA’s ‘Aanmega Kalaikalanjiyam’.
Note: Deepavali is usually celebrated on either ‘new moon day’ (Ammavasai) or one day before or after that day. New Moon day signifies the completion of Dark. After new moon day comes light. So the fall of Narakasuran happened on the new moon day, since he signifies the dark characters. Our Vallalperuman delivered the “Payir Upadesam” on the day that followed the Deepavali on 22-10-1873. (On that year, Deepavali was celebrated on the night of 20/10/1873 and on the day of 21/10/1823) The day that followed Deepavali starts the light (wisdom). So our Vallalperuman chose 22-10-1873 to reveal the grand wisdom to all.
