VALLALAR UNIVERSAL MISSION TRUST-SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC AT THE TIME OF HEAVY RAINS AT RAMANATHAPURAM.

VALLALAR UNIVERSAL MISSION TRUST-SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC AT THE TIME OF HEAVY RAINS AT RAMANATHAPURAM.

There were unprecedented rains at Ramanathapuram during October, 2008 due to the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.

The Government of Tamil Nadu announced holiday to the Educational institutions including colleges on 21.10.2008.

The Vaigai river from Madurai and its surrounding places received more water and it is flowing for the past 3 or 4 days. Normally, if the Vaigai Dam receives more water, automatically it will be released to the lower level tanks through the river.

The river water will empty at Ramanathapuram Big tank because it is the last point and too close (i.e.8 kms) from the sea. In case if the Ramanathapuram Big tank receives more than sufficient of the capacity of that tank, the surplus water will be released to the sea. There are regulators on the Eastern and Northern sides of the Ramanathapuram Big Tank. The Public Works Department people under the guidance of the Govt, will guard the tanks to avoid any breach.

If it is not properly guarded, the surplus water will go and ruin the villages nearby and enter into Ramanathapuram Town also.

This time, Ramanathapuram Town and its surrounding received more than sufficient rains for the past one week.

4 days back 22 centimetres.

3 days back another 8 centimetres.

2 days back another 4 centimeters.

So, at present, Ramanathapuram is flooded on all the sides. All the Ooranies within the town and the system tanks nearby Ramanathapuram Town received more than their capacity.

Vallalar Universal Mission Trust now run by Thiru Rajaveer & Pazhani and his family, prepared food packets to the public residing at the marooned areas on that day (21.10.2008) itself and supplied to the affected persons.

It is also watching the situation closely.
