A Sanmargi's Thoughts (சன்மார்க்கியின் சிந்தனைகள்)
Please Empathize towards other Living Beings
Anbazhagan was rushing in his bike to see his close friend... Both were planning to see movie that day evening... He started late for the movie... His friend Kumar was waiting outside his home... Anbazhagan told his formal note of sorry and they both started together for the movie...

They were riding in the narrow short cut streets to avoid being held up in traffic... Suddenly a stray dog was crossing their way... Anbazhagan put sudden brake and lost control of the vehicle and hit a big stone near the corner of the street and both of them fell from the vehicle... The bike wheel ran over the hind leg of the dog... Dog was whining loudly... It was writhing in pain... The vociferous street suddenly came to stillness, with the dog's outcry... Both the guys had small scratches in their body...

Anbazhagan got up and came to Kumar and asked him whether there was any big hurt for him... Kumar replied in negative... Anbazhagan goaded Kumar to start for the movie as they were running late for the movie... Kumar went straight to the dog and lifted it smoothly with his hands... He saw the bruised leg of dog... Tears were rolling from its eyes... Kumar became very much empathized with the dog's plight...

Kumar asked Anbazhagan to ride towards nearby veterinarian... Anbazhagan was very angry towards Kumar. He told that "It is only a stray dog. Throw it to the corner of the street. Crows, Eagles will have food from this immobile dog". Kumar questioned Anbazhagan "Are u going to drive or Can I go by auto?” Anbazhagan knew about Kumar very well. Kumar is a strict Sanmargi and practices the principles of vallalar. Kumar had given elaborate lectures on the principles of Jeeva karunya and Sanmargam. But, Anbazhagan was a staunch non-vegetarian and found those lectures very bore some... But, Kumar was reiterating those principles again and again to Anbazhagan whenever some context to it arose in their day to day life.

Anbazhagan rode straight into the veterinarian clinic. The doctor bandaged the wounded leg inside the clinic. Anbazhagan and Kumar were waiting in the lobby. Anbazhagan chided Kumar for being the reason for missing the movie. Kumar asked him "If my leg got injured, whether would you leave me in the street and go for movie? Why are you so self-centered? If something happens to you or your family and friends, you feel the pain... If it is some third person then you don’t have empathy towards that person... There is one adage about hurting a living being: "When you hurt a living being, you consider yourself in the position of the living being and feel the pain. Then you will not hurt anybody". If your action is causing hurt to a living being in the present or future, then feel the hurt in the perspective of the living being and don’t do the action. When you strike a cockroach, you consider yourself in the place of cockroach, then you will not hit it... All living being have the equal right to live happily in this world. You don’t have the right to hurt the happiness of another living being. Vallalar told that whenever he saw wan shrubs, he himself became wan. You should have that kind of empathy in life towards other living being's pain. Saint Vallalar and Saint Thayumanava remarked this principle as a very famous adage "Let all living beings live happily". They founded the principle of "Universal Brotherhood", where every living being is your brother, be it elephant or ant. When you eat non-vegetarian, feel the pain of the animals being knifed to death, then you will not eat non-vegetarian. You don’t have the right to disturb the other living being's life. Suddenly Anbazhagan became pensive. He was suddenly wistful and was carefully observing the doctor's care towards the dog.

Then, Doctor turned up towards them with the dog. He reflected that "People come to my clinic to treat their own dog. It is one of the rare occasions, where I am privileged to treat a stray dog. You people are really very broadminded to bring this bruised dog here. I don’t want a fee for treating him. I consider this as my turn to do something towards many stray dogs, which lead their whole life with the wounded leg without being treated". When Kumar extended his arms to get the dog from doctor, pair of arms blocked his. Anbazhagan got the dog from doctor. He glimpsed the blend of gratitude and peace in the dog's eyes. He told doctor that "From today, I am going to bring up this dog in my house. He is my brother. Today I thought that I am going to see movie. But, God has taught me a lesson for my life. I am also a sanmargi from today". Tears of happiness were rolling down from the eyes of both Kumar and doctor.
