ARUTPERUNJOTHI AGAVAL
SWAMI SARAVANAANDA
Swami Saravanaananda of Dindigul has written many explanatory note to Vallalar’s Thiru Arutpa poems. Arutperunjothi Agaval is one among the Thiru Arutpa Poem which contains 1,596 lines. Swamiji also wrote explanatory note to Arutperunjothi Agaval, long back. But the whole translation is not available. From the manuscript copy, it has been typed and presented here.
Hence, the available portion which starts from the lines (151) out of (1596) are given below.
76. Big, small and Rare one
(Perithum Sirithum and Arithum)
(பெரிதும் சிறிது அரிதும்)
151. Perithinum Perithaych Sirithinum Sirithay
151. பெரிதினும் பெரிதாய்ச் சிறிதினும் சிறிதாய்
152. Arithinum aritham Arutperumjothi
152. அரிதினும் அரிதாம் அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி
In the three extreme stages, our Arutperumjothi is explained here. Its magnificent minutes and meaningful rarity are pointed out (highness and smallness) in these lines. First its Magnificent (biggest) size is dealt with. How much big (magnificent) is our Arutperumjothi? To which light can this be compared? There is no other light anywhere in the universe which is comparable to Arutperumjothi in its nature and size. We see many lights or light emitting bodies in the universe, the size of which are limited. Even the universe, we see, taken as a whole may be thought to be light filled space that too, cannot be to our Arutperumjothi. The space we see is only a fractional portion of the whole space. Therefore, space filled light too is not so big. Besides any of the biggest light, at a very far distance appears very small; and at some furthest distance, stars which are much bigger in size than our sun, look too small to be visible to us. Our light of infinite grace is ever filled in the whole space which is always limitless in size and will never decrease or increase in form from wherever it is seen or realized by His grace. Hence, its bigness is so great that nothing else could be compared to it at all.
Let us now consider the minuteness of our Arutperumjothi. we are able to see only small dust like particles with our naked eyes. With the help of very powerful instruments like electron microscope or field con-microscope, we can perceive very smallest particle or proton of an atom. Will that be smallest form in which God contains ? No, in forms smaller than the smallest form, known by any means to the man, is our Arutperumjothi existing with its full power of omnigrace. Therefore, we cannot say this is the smallest form of God and in the form smaller than that one, He may not and cannot exist. “But we cannot acknowledge him in any known or unknown form unless we realize him by His omnigrace in our soul or self.
Thirdly, the rareness of Arutperumjothi is pointed here. It is the only the rarest thing in the world, any other thing is not so rare as this or rarer than this one. There may be some rarest thing in the world and it may be very hard and impossible to obtain; but by some means anybody can obtain by this effort; rarity means uncommonness, that is, our Arutperumjothi will not embrace the ordinary sensuous or mental perception like any other common things. One cannot find this rarest Arutperumjothi anywhere in the universe. It is uncommon object known to the world. But it will be realizable by any man of grace; he can see this rarest of rare thing as a supreme common object in any common or uncommon objects. Therefore, this Arutperumjothi is all the biggest, the smallest and the rarest and not to be understandable or obtainable to any man of unripe state. Only the man of omnigrace who has completely lost his egoic spirit and has become one with the gracious light itself will be able to acknowledge the divine truth of its bigness, smallness and rareness. It is only after this acknowledgement that he begins to live a gracious life in this world and all the divine qualities mentioned above come to his practical experience. In his life, the rarest or uncommon thing, I mean Arutperumjothi comes to him as a common thing. This commonness makes him to live in oneness of God with endless blissful experience.
77. Perception and Governance
(Katchiyum atchiyum ayathu)
(காட்சியும் ஆட்சியும் ஆயது)
153.Katchiyum Kanak Katchiyum athu tharum
153. காட்சியும் காணாக் காட்சியும் அதுதரும்
153. Atchiyum ahiya Arutperumjothi
154. ஆட்சியும் ஆகிய அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி
This universe is a great exhibition in which we are seeing innumerable things, lives, powers and energies. These objects are visible (Sensible) to mind through a sense organ. All those visible appearance make vague or deep impressions in the mind of man, where they get into the forms of thought – layers which at times appear and disappear (in mind’s eye or imagination).
Man is created in the image of God; so he is intended to know all the common and the creator and in the eventual experience he is to live the Divine Blissful life. But before this final emancipation he is to pass through all the physical, vital, mental and spiritual senses. The life force in man gives power to sense organs to sense experience. Through five senses, man gets the experience of the material world around. To the sense- experience, the mind also is to cooperate with each organ. Then only, the perception will be effective and retained in thought. The mind’s perception is more extensive than the sensuous one. Above the mind is soul its perception is spiritual experience which is more expensive than mental one. Upto these different stages, the perception will be objective. That is, these senses are experienced by a man being separate from them. These are called simply, Katchi. (காட்சி) The next one is noted as a ‘kanakkatchi’ (காணாக்காட்சி) i.e. that cannot be perceived separately. Therefore, the former Katchi (காட்சி) must be taken as ‘Kanum’(காணும்) or ‘Kanappadum’ (காணப்படும்). Hence, we have to be enlightened about the ‘Kanakkatchi’ (காணாக்காட்சி) here.
In the human life, the divine soul only is eternal, from which all our life, intellect knowledge and sensuous body and its experience have been evolved. Therefore, it is indeed we, as an individual divine soul-being or extending ourselves from the priestive soul level to the body level. In the outer life, we have ourselves separated and we experience the soul level as above ourselves. This is only delusive. Therefore, the scenes experienced by man from lower levels appear to be objective. But we hold ourselves in the divine soul – level. all the senses will become the evolution ourselves. This is called subject. And this is referred here as ‘Kanakkatchi’(காணாக்காட்சி), “Kanakkatchi” (காணாக்காட்சி), is the experience of the divine soul. in which the divine grace itself is expanded into all the world scene. Besides, by the control of that divine grace, everything in governed in the whole universe. Therefore, in this divine experience the gracious man of attainment is truly a controller and ruler of the universe. Our Vallalar has got the power of experieneing both the objective and subjective scenes of the universe and above all has been ordained to rule all. In fact, the omnipotent God was the now ruling from the unseen innermost of everything, but now he has himself come out in the perceptible form of our Vallalar and he is continuing his rule for ever.
By the natural law of God, man was going on towards the unknown goal of life on the life’s journey he encountered all kinds of pleasures and pains and he was unable to get rid of the birth and death cycle. But now, by the advent of our Arutprakasar (அருட்பிரகாசர்), a divine blessed life has damned upon this planet. By his gracious attainment, a divine freedom has come to all souls of the universal. Hence, every soul is hereafter entitled to live in the form of ‘Suddha Sanmarga”(சுத்த சன்மார்க்கம்) as an immortal Man and to rule the universe to bring all perfect soul to his highest level.
78. Lovingly Blesses with all attainments.
(Siddhigal ellam anbudan arulvathu)
(சித்திகள் எல்லாம் அன்புடன் அருள்வது)
155.Inburu Siddhigal ellam puriga (v) enru (u)
155.இன்புறு சித்திகள் எல்லாம் புரிக என்று
156. Anbudan enakkarul Arutperumjothi
156. அன்புடன் எனக்கருள் அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி
We may take these lines along with the preceding couplet, because the attainment, offered to him are to be implemented from that inner abode, where the almighty is in oneness of him and supplies everything pleased to him for the good of the universe.
Every man has been endowed with some power and things to serve the fellow beings. He who is doing his work with pure mind and heart will be getting on without any fear and troubles. Besides, he will be receiving more and more power and help to perform his human services. On the other hand, those who live for their own sensuous enjoyments will have to undergo some painful trials and hindrances in their lives. Reasoning man is to follow the right path of serving the beings and thereby get the grace of God to be blessed with a good happy life.
Swami Ramalingam by full compassion serving for the highest good for the humanity (living beings) was chosen by Arutperumjothi to fulfil the divine work of bringing suddha sanmarga to the world. God Almighty is keeping our Vallalar in oneness of Him and is ever helping to propagate the right way or suddha sanmargam to the earnest aspirants anywhere in the world. While the higher intention of doing good to the people, he can do some miracles which would advertise him widely; but he depressed such advertisement. If any wonder comes out from him, it is only God’s will and pleasure; so it will be giving life and power both to the doer and to receiver. His power is spontaneously flowing from the divinic, perennial source for eternity. But, on the other hand, the miraculous deeds done by spiritualists or the so-called siddhas lose their power and life-energy by doing each such miracle. This Vallalar was pleasingly designed by Arutperumjothi to perform all blissful deeds as he wished. It is the good will of Swamigal to fulfill his work of everlasting bliss by his power to change the mind, heart and deeds of people to be filled with grace. He never like to do miracles which attract big crowds. Whenever he sees and knows the ignorant, awarious people under distress and danger, he feels very much and prays God to give them advice and solace. He can do good by his mysterious power but he won’t do, because it is the intention God to make the sufferers to overcome the distress by practical experience.
At present, the humanity is undergoing very dangerous and serious difficulties. The hearts and minds of people are filled with sensuous longings for carnal pleasures. They are doing wrong things without knowing the right ones. By ignorance, many are trumpeting and doing much harm to themselves and others. Why are all these taking place, while our gracious Vallalar along with omnigracious Arutperumjothi is looking after this world’s situation and welfare? The gracious divinity can change all the worst or can avoid or prevent the worst from happening, but it seems God and our compassionate Vallalar too are keeping quiet as if they are unaware of all the world situation. The fact is this, the mind and heart of the whole mankind is to be changed gracious which is due to come only after the worst is lived and experienced practically. The climax to this situation is nearing now and so, very soon, the turning point will be seen and a new good life will turn upon these planets. That will be the most wonderful miracle coming to our world through our Vallalar.
79. Immortality designed by virtuous one.
(Irava varam aliththa Aravazhi)
(இறவா வரம் அளித்த அறவாழி)
157.Irava Varamaliththu, ennai mel etrtriya
157.இறவா வரமளித்து என்னை மேல் ஏற்றிய
158. Aravazhiyam thani Arutperumjothi
158. அறவாழியாம் தனி அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி
Truth comes to our knowledge, but long afterwards it is practically experienced in the life of man. So, the divine truth also came to the knowledge of man some thousands of years ago. At first, it was not clear, but was misunderstood and wrongly interpreted. But later on, when man went deeper and deeper the divine grace came out and impressed him to know the truth as it is. To reach this stage also, it has taken many thousands of years. From this plane of knowledge the mankind was moving slowly towards the truth for its actual (practical) experience in life. During this period, all religious scriptures, Vedanta philosophies and all sciences however been brought out by men of different stages. By these books knowledge, men were following different ways and different stages.. By these books of knowledge, men were following different ways and different methods. With all these book knowledge and teaching the one supreme divine truth was not conspicuously understood by the humanity.
Now through our Swamigal, the Supreme Gracious God, Arutperumjothi has come out and is working for the practical experience. This is the wonderful service of Vallalar to the world to attain blessed life. It will be done in the near future.
80. Egoless ‘I’ and Eternal Bliss
(Nan anthamillai Anantham)
நான் அந்தமில்லா ஆனந்தம்
159.Nan andhamilla Nalam Pera enakke
160. நான் அந்தமில்லா நலம் பெற எனக்கே
161.Anandham nalgiya Arutperumjothi
161. ஆனந்தம் நல்கிய அருட்பெருஞ்ஜோதி
What is the real Bliss? It is said ‘ Anandha or Inbam’(ஆனந்தம் / இன்பம்). Some people think that, Anandham (ஆனந்தம்) is a sanskrit word equal to (இன்பம்). In fact, Anandham (ஆனந்தம்) is the real divine Bliss, experience in the practical life of a man of divine knowledge. At lower stages, true bliss was not understood, instead, the sensuous pleasure mental happiness and spiritual delight were thought to be blessing in different stages. Finally, the man, holding himself is the soul-abide, gets himself evapored and this raptive state of soul is taken as bliss. This is truly bliss, this is termed ‘anandham’ by the man, because this is obtained by spiritual word ‘Anandham’ (ஆனந்தம்) in to An + andham ( ஆன் + அந்தம் ). An (ஆன்) is the soul and andham (அந்தம்) is the end; this anandham (ஆனந்தம்) is the end of the soul.
Till now, the end or the soul or bliss was experienced only in the rapturous stage until he was living in the physical body. When the body is destroyed, the soul – experiencing life comes to an end. Then where is this? In the bodiless stage, the soul lives only in inconscient stage. When again that soul enters a physical bodily life, the blissful experience may come at its maturity. Neither in the bodily stage nor in the short or lower sensed lives can soul knowledge and bliss he experienced. Therefore, the end of bodiless state a soul is not the final.
Then what is the real end of soul or bliss of a soul to this generation, our Vallalar gives the answer with his eternal life of endless body bliss. How did he got this endless bliss? Yes, by the omnigrace of God, this Ramalingar got the highest gracious stage where he became (losing his egoic spirit), Arutperumjothi itself. Therefore, he is living as Arutperumjothi or Artuprakasar (அருட்பிரகாசர்) for ever. In this life, the divine Bliss is eternal. This divine stage of a person is truly our egoless soul or God, Arutperumjothi itself. Henceforth this endless blissful life is offered to everybody who gets this upper stage of omingrace.
