The tasks being carried out by Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga Sangam for furtherance of Sanmarga principles.
The method of worship established by Vallalar
The vast vista of Vadalur is a land offered to Vallalar by the people of Parvathipuram (now called as Vadalur) some 150 years ago. Vallalar stayed on that land and completed the erection of the Dharmasalai in the year 1867 to offer free food to all. In 1872, he constructed the Gnana Sabai so that people of all religions, castes and creed could worship the perennial lamp that he lit up there. The 52 iron links that symbolically form a chain and surround the Gnana Sabai signal the message that one who is determined and dedicated can remove these chains of bondage one by one, liberate from the various attachments and experience the Vast Grace of Light (Arutperum jothi).
Over the course of several years, the Sivachariars who were maintaining the Gnana Sabai converted the worship into a ritual of Siva worship. Despite repeated attempts by many wise and realized people to revert to the worship of the Vast Grace of Light, the ritualistic worship (vehemently opposed by Vallalar) continued. To end this unacceptable practice, Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga Sangam arranged for a cut-motion to be introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Acceding to this request, the Tamil Nadu Government arranged to appoint a high-level committee under the aegis of theHindu Religious and Endowment Commissioner. Thirumathi A.S. Ponnammal, a veteran member of the august assembly for over 35 years, was appointed as the chairperson of the committee. Briefing her of the situation, the Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga SAngam went with Thirumathi Ponnammal to Vadalur where she witnessed the rituals then being conducted. A comprehensive report of the situation at Vadalur was submitted by Thirumathi Ponnammal to the Honourable Chief Minister who asked the Hindu Religions & Charitable Endowment Commissioner Thiru Pitchandi, I.A.S., to look into the matter. Upon due consideration, Thiru Pitchandi ruled in favour of the worship to the Vast Grace Jothi replacing the many years of Saiva Agama worship. It is only through the initiative of Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga Sangam, the worship at Vadalur has been restored to the method established by Vallalar Swamigal himself.
Government approval being sought to the Survey prepared by the Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga Sangam.
The land (of 80 kaanis) that was offered as a gift to Vallalar by the residents of Parvathipuram (now called as Vadalur) some 150 years ago is in an utter state of neglect. A major portion of the land is parched and surrounded by bushes and shrubs, some portions forcibly occupied by unauthorized persons, some portions usurped by many an association who have built edifices on the land, legality of such building being questionable, and yet another portion of the land having been divided by the Sivachariars, who were the grantees of residential permits, and who resorted to selling and transferring some such divisions through pattas. All these became evident when Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga SAngam, acting through a team of professional engineers headed by Dr. M.S. Venugopal, arranged for a detailed survey carried out by means of sophisticated electronic equipment. The survey showing the entire gamut of the land with the present situation was already submitted to Thiru Pitchandi, I.A.S., the H.R & C.E. Commissioner. It will be seen from the attached survey how extensive the infringement on the land took place over the years. It is requested that the attached survey be approved by the appropriate authority of the Government after due consideration and processing.
Seeking permission of the Government authorizing the Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga Sangam to prepare the Master Plan for the Vadalur Site.
About 150 years ago, Vallalar made a prophetic statement that “Vadalur will one day become like Cuddalore”. In the South Arcot District, Cuddalore is a principal port city. The present industrial town of Neyveli is adjacent to Vadalur which was previously known as Parvathipuram, a little hamlet in the old days. The development of that tiny village today is astounding. The Dharma Salai and Gnana Sabai established by Vallalar in the late 19th century are the main reason for the progress of Vadalur Thiru Pitchandi, I.A.S., H.R. & C.E. Commissiioner, has beautifully adorned the grave of Kalpattu Iyah, a close associate and disciple of Vallalar.
Attached is the architect’s projection of the proposed Building at the Vadalur site, along with detailed Plan, Estimate and Structural Design, prepared by Civil Engineer Dr. M.S. Venugopal on behalf ot eh Vallalar Pannattu Sanmarga SAngam. This plan has already been submitted to Thiru Pitchandi. Some of the immediate work has already been taken in hand after obtaining the clearance from the Endowment Commissioner. The estimated cost is Rs.210 Crores, details of which are also attached. The total project is expected to be phased over a period of three and a half years.
A detailed and artistic rendering of the Front Elevation of the Gnana Sabai is under preparation with all the intricate details and is expected to be submitted to the Endowment Commissiioner. The detailed Master Plan is expected to include several of the dream projects that were envisaged byVallalar (and covered in his texts) that are yet to be implemented. These are for example as follows:
· Medical dispensary and hospital (Vaidyasalai Maruththuvamanai)
· Developmental hall (Viruththisalai Munnetra Mandram)
· Hall for scriptures (Sasthirasaalai Pazham perum noolkalin karuvarai)
· Meditation hall (Upasanasalai Mana amaithi arangam)
· Hall for assistance and counseling (Upakarasalai Pothu uthavi maiyam)
· Yoga hall (Yogasalai-Manam/Udal uruthiyetru nilaiyam)
Furthermore, to provide suitable accommodation to hundreds of Sanmarga pilgrims coming from other parts of this country and from abroad, it is proposed to construct residential hostel-type facilities within the upgraded facility itself. Also, like in the case of Dharmasala in Karnataka State, it is proposed to construct technically modern industrial type kitchens with completely hygienic facilities and a larger and convenient dining hall, The following facilities will also be added:
  • Drinking and potable water facilities throughout the open yard
  • Adequate toilet facilities and wash rooms
  • Proper drainage
  • Effluent treatment plant
  • Reverse osmosis process for recycling drained water that could be reused
  • Laying of convenient roads within the complex
  • Construction of stages and halls for musical programmes and discourses.
  • Planting of flower plants and herbal plants
  • Cleaning up and restoration of the existing tank near the Gnana Sabai
  • Augmenting the income of the centre by setting up a row of shops at front
  • Construction of appropriate living quarters for the Executive Officer
  • Construction of suitable retiring rooms for dignitaries and Govt.Officers
  • Earmarking and maintenance of suitable parking lots for vehicles.
